PushPull

re-thinking accordion

PushPull is a hybrid instrument created as part of the 3DMIN project at UdK Berlin. Its central control element is a bellow combining inertial sensor data with mechano-analog sound input (breathing of the bellow) which can be freely combined with digital sound synthesis. Inertial sensors in the hand piece and capacitive sensor areas for each finger allow for continuous sound shaping. Four buttons and two rotation encoders on the bottom can be used to trigger discrete changes or switch between synthesis engines. Its current collection of implemented playing modes ranges from melodic sounds to complex feedback structures played with metacontrol strategies.

PushPull made a third place at the 2015 Guthman Instrument Competition.
