Peripheral Awareness

upstairs?

Till Bovermann, Christian Leichsenring, René Tünnermann (2011, 2012)

Noise diffuses through walls. Listening to them can offer long-term insights about the lifestyle of upstairs neighbours. We connected two remote spaces by introducing an artificial bi-directional auditory cue between them. It offers a group that is distributed between two non-colocated areas a peripheral connection and makes them aware of activities on the other side. The system is sound-based, operating on an almost subliminal level and can therefore be used parallel to other activities.

We presented a paper about upstairs at Pervasive 2012.
