sonic intervention wilderness

— being in the field

Till Bovermann, Antye Greie-Ripatti

A radio feature I produced for framework radio in 2017 related to SIW.

A place is a Sonic Intervention Wilderness (SIW), if it is unknown to me in a specific sense. It describes an environment that appears sonically uncanny, alien, sublime, independent of the familiarity it might have to me in a different context. By using my auditory senses as well as actions to add and complement to auditory character of the place, my perception of it may change over time: from being wild to an auditorily familiar place.

The concept of SIW appeared first in discussions with Antye Greie and participants of the Field_Notes Hybrid Matters event in 2015. Since then it has been used in various contexts.
